About the Community Autism Peer Specialist (CAPS) Program

Empowering Autistic Adults Through Shared Experience

The Community Autism Peer Specialist (CAPS) Program at Mental Health Partnerships connects individuals on the autism spectrum with trained peers who share similar lived experiences. This person-centered model of support is grounded in mutual respect, trust, and self-determination. CAPS help participants pursue meaningful goals—whether it’s navigating school, improving communication skills, living more independently, or getting involved in their local community.

What Does a CAPS Do?

CAPS team members are individuals on the autism spectrum who have completed a state-approved Certified Peer Specialist training. Using their own journey as a foundation, they provide one-on-one support that prioritizes self-advocacy, wellness, and social inclusion. Each CAPS builds a personalized partnership with their participant based on the participant’s unique goals and preferences.

Who Can Benefit?

CAPS is ideal for autistic individuals who have aged out of youth services or are navigating transitions in adulthood. Whether you’re figuring out your next step after school, managing a new diagnosis, or looking to increase your community involvement, CAPS can offer guidance and practical skill-building based on shared understanding.

  • Peer-to-Peer Connection: CAPS mentors relate personally to the challenges and strengths of being on the spectrum.
  • Flexible Goals: Support might focus on postsecondary education, job skills, managing appointments, socializing, or travel training.
  • Real-World Support: CAPS meet participants in their homes or communities—wherever growth is happening in real time.
  • Collaborative Network: CAPS can work alongside therapists, family members, educators, or case managers as part of a broader support system.

Why This Program Matters

Many services for autistic individuals end after childhood or are designed from a clinical perspective. CAPS fills a critical gap by offering real-life mentorship and relationship-building between equals. This can lead to increased confidence, reduced isolation, and progress toward independence and self-defined success. CAPS doesn’t replace traditional care—it enhances it with the power of community and peer connection.
