Compeer: Mental Wellness Through the Power of Friendship

Support a neighbor, build a bond, and make a difference. Compeer volunteers provide friendship and social connection to adults in Chester County managing mental health challenges.

About the Compeer Program

Friendship That Fosters Mental Wellness

The Compeer program at Mental Health Partnerships creates life-changing connections by matching adult volunteers with individuals in Chester County who are on their journey of mental health recovery. These non-clinical, one-to-one friendships provide consistent emotional support through the simplest yet most powerful tool—human connection. By spending time together, sharing stories, and showing up with compassion, volunteers help reduce social isolation and promote wellness, one friendship at a time.

Who Can Volunteer?

  • You must be 18 years or older
  • You must pass a background check
  • You must commit to approximately 4 hours per month

If you know how to be a good friend, you already have what it takes. Volunteers are paired with individuals based on shared interests, location, and preferences. Each volunteer receives training and ongoing support from our staff to ensure a successful match. Pairs choose their own schedule and activities, which might include chatting over coffee, taking a walk, going to a community event, or simply spending time together doing something they both enjoy.

Why Compeer Matters

Social isolation is one of the most overlooked barriers to mental wellness. Compeer tackles this challenge head-on by offering the gift of companionship—something simple, but incredibly powerful. People who participate in the program often report increased self-esteem, reduced loneliness, and a renewed sense of hope. And for volunteers, the impact is mutual. Many describe personal growth, new perspectives, and deeper community ties as key takeaways from their experience.

Community Events and Ongoing Support

Compeer isn’t just about one-on-one relationships. We also host occasional group events like bowling, picnics, and seasonal celebrations to foster a wider sense of community. These relaxed, inclusive events give friends and volunteers the chance to meet others in the program, share experiences, and feel supported as part of something bigger.

Compeer thrives thanks to a blend of public contracts and private donations. If you'd like to contribute to the impact of friendship, donate online and select “Compeer” as your designation. You can also mail a check to:
